My Students

Homework for the Weekend

  • Review for Vocabulary Quiz (Lesson 1-5)
  • Poetry Questions 1-6 (Remember to answer in complete sentences)
  • Study for provincial exam (do practise exams online)

It's been awhile since I have reflected on being a teacher.

I love my students, I do. When they love to learn, it makes me feel going into teaching is worth it. When I see they are trying even when they have to work so hard, it makes me feel being a teacher can truly make a difference.

I always hope the best for my students. I always hope they can be the best that they can be. It doesn't matter if they fail but as long as they try. Trying is the most important part.

It really breaks my heart when some students don't try their best. I see the superstar in them and I wish I can help them see they have so much inside to offer to the world!

I know the provincial exam is coming and I also feel nervous as well. How can I help my students feel strong enough to handle it? It is their first attempt at this really difficult exam. There is nothing to fear. The exam is not the only thing about learning. The exam is not going to destroy your future if you don't get a good mark.

See the provincial as a learning process. What can you learn from it? How can you improve the next time you take it?

Absorb. I love the way Jessie explains it. Eat the worksheets, eat the handouts, gorge on the vocabulary lessons and gnaw at all the opportunities to learn.

I truly think my students are amazing. Each and everyone of them are so unique. Their energy, their intelligence, their smile and their persistence inspires me everyday to get up in the morning and go to school even after I have graduated.

I truly love teaching. I really hope my students would truly love learning.

A teacher's mind is very busy! Here is an example of my mind.

Lately, my mind has been full.

I worry about the students who are having difficulty in Science.
I worry about some girls in my English 10 who are not trying their best. I worry about them.
I worry about some students who tell me they are working hard but their marks are still not high.
I worry about some students who are always late to class.
I worry about some students who don't listen in class.
I worry about some students who fall asleep.
I worry about some students who are in love with their video games and computer (a little too much).
I worry about some students who are having difficulty with their lives outside of the classroom.

Although I worry, I know how much I care about them when I still think of how to help my students even when I am sleeping! How do I make sure they are writing essays but they don't feel overwhelmed? How do I balance each day, each week and each month with activities that are both meaningful and important? How can I make it interesting for them?

To my students who are trying their best, I thank you. You give me faith to be a teacher and you give me the energy to give you everything I know!

To my students who make me laugh and excel (Helen, Bo, Joy, Nancy Z, Peter and Jennifer...and some more), I thank you. Your happiness makes my classroom a warm place to be even when the walls are a little bit cold.

To my students who put their everything into each class (Jessie, Nina, Rena, Angela, Catherine, Tommy, Lym, Helen W., Candy, Jessica, Briandney, Heaven and some more), I thank you for showing me persistence and determination through difficult tasks.

To my students who work so well together when I am not looking (Mya, Viahsta, Milly, Cristine, Sai, Carolyn, Ivor, Charty, Nancy L, Amy, Jane, Austin, Mark and some more...), I thank you for being a team and part of the community.

To my students who visit me but who are now in Grade 11, I miss teaching you all. You are in really good hands. Ms. Yu is an amazing teacher who will guide you to the next level of English!

To my students who I don't teach but constantly write essays on Thursdays, I admire your attitude for learning. Your bravery to face each essay topic is not easy to do.

My last note...

Do your homework for yourself and not for the teacher. Learning for yourself is the key to good marks. Learning to improve yourself is the key to good marks as well.

Truly be the best that you can be. You only have one life to live. What do you have to lose?
