My Students

Homework for the Weekend

  • Review for Vocabulary Quiz (Lesson 1-5)
  • Poetry Questions 1-6 (Remember to answer in complete sentences)
  • Study for provincial exam (do practise exams online)

It's been awhile since I have reflected on being a teacher.

I love my students, I do. When they love to learn, it makes me feel going into teaching is worth it. When I see they are trying even when they have to work so hard, it makes me feel being a teacher can truly make a difference.

I always hope the best for my students. I always hope they can be the best that they can be. It doesn't matter if they fail but as long as they try. Trying is the most important part.

It really breaks my heart when some students don't try their best. I see the superstar in them and I wish I can help them see they have so much inside to offer to the world!

I know the provincial exam is coming and I also feel nervous as well. How can I help my students feel strong enough to handle it? It is their first attempt at this really difficult exam. There is nothing to fear. The exam is not the only thing about learning. The exam is not going to destroy your future if you don't get a good mark.

See the provincial as a learning process. What can you learn from it? How can you improve the next time you take it?

Absorb. I love the way Jessie explains it. Eat the worksheets, eat the handouts, gorge on the vocabulary lessons and gnaw at all the opportunities to learn.

I truly think my students are amazing. Each and everyone of them are so unique. Their energy, their intelligence, their smile and their persistence inspires me everyday to get up in the morning and go to school even after I have graduated.

I truly love teaching. I really hope my students would truly love learning.

A teacher's mind is very busy! Here is an example of my mind.

Lately, my mind has been full.

I worry about the students who are having difficulty in Science.
I worry about some girls in my English 10 who are not trying their best. I worry about them.
I worry about some students who tell me they are working hard but their marks are still not high.
I worry about some students who are always late to class.
I worry about some students who don't listen in class.
I worry about some students who fall asleep.
I worry about some students who are in love with their video games and computer (a little too much).
I worry about some students who are having difficulty with their lives outside of the classroom.

Although I worry, I know how much I care about them when I still think of how to help my students even when I am sleeping! How do I make sure they are writing essays but they don't feel overwhelmed? How do I balance each day, each week and each month with activities that are both meaningful and important? How can I make it interesting for them?

To my students who are trying their best, I thank you. You give me faith to be a teacher and you give me the energy to give you everything I know!

To my students who make me laugh and excel (Helen, Bo, Joy, Nancy Z, Peter and Jennifer...and some more), I thank you. Your happiness makes my classroom a warm place to be even when the walls are a little bit cold.

To my students who put their everything into each class (Jessie, Nina, Rena, Angela, Catherine, Tommy, Lym, Helen W., Candy, Jessica, Briandney, Heaven and some more), I thank you for showing me persistence and determination through difficult tasks.

To my students who work so well together when I am not looking (Mya, Viahsta, Milly, Cristine, Sai, Carolyn, Ivor, Charty, Nancy L, Amy, Jane, Austin, Mark and some more...), I thank you for being a team and part of the community.

To my students who visit me but who are now in Grade 11, I miss teaching you all. You are in really good hands. Ms. Yu is an amazing teacher who will guide you to the next level of English!

To my students who I don't teach but constantly write essays on Thursdays, I admire your attitude for learning. Your bravery to face each essay topic is not easy to do.

My last note...

Do your homework for yourself and not for the teacher. Learning for yourself is the key to good marks. Learning to improve yourself is the key to good marks as well.

Truly be the best that you can be. You only have one life to live. What do you have to lose?

  1. Dear Ms.Chan, you moved me!!
I see a true teacher, a great teacher!!
Everyone knows you are a really really good teacher, and we thank for everything you did for us!!

I see you are smiling everday, but i know you just wanna make us happy, and arouse our interest of studying by your lovely smiling.:) But in fact, you are so worried about us.

In our class, there're still some students who are not hardworking enough. Maybe they are not smart enough, but i think it is not the most important reason! The most important reason is: they haven't realize how important studying is for their future!

I always believe that nothing is impossible. It's just depend on if they want to be better. Of course, some students' parents are so rich, they think everything is nothing as long as they have adequate money. They can waste time, waste money, waste anything. But they want to spend their parents' money for the whole rest of life??? So stupid.....

  2. Also, there're some students who are looks like so hardworking but they can not get the mark they expect. Pherhaps they are not hardworking enough..= =

As long as someday, they cruelly fall, they will regret why they were not more hardworking, regret the waste of time... After that, they will be sooooo hardworking.
It must be true because it explains that failure is the mother of success..

So, my dear Ms.Chan, you can see actully most of your student are a little hardworking, at least they are trying. They will get a good mark in the provincial exams with their trying and your helping!:)

  3. Dear Ms. Chan,

Such an inspirational post! You are truly an amazing and talented teacher. I really do hope they see how much we love them, how much we think about them, and how much we want them to succeed - every single one of them! There are no failures as long as they are trying. And although the provincials are looming, I'm sure we'll prepare these brilliant and bright individuals for the exam! Keep climbing high! If you fall, we're here to catch you and push you up again!

  4. Ms.Chan,
Thank you for comming and commenting on my blog.

Your advice gave me a lot of courage.
Recently, I really feel tired, and sometimes, just want to stop all the things that I am doing. Actually, my life is not really busy, there are many student who are much more hard-working than me. Perhaps this is the turning point of my life. Passing this crisis, I will become much more mature and be able to grin and bear it even if I become more busy or face any trying hardship in the future.

  5. Ms.Chan, my dear teacher~ Your post has shown how a wonderful teaher you are! I'm not a person who has intensity emotion, but what you had said moves me a lot. I've already know that you want to see all of us will working hard, and naturally , to get a good mark. But just now, after I read your post, your hopeness and the care that you put in each of us have moved me completly. It is much more difficult to teach the students like us. Our mother language are not English, because of this problem, you have to improve are not only our examing skill, but also our language ability. Actually, you are successful. My English is much better than befre, but in your eyes, a tiny success like that is not worth mentioning. So I know, I have to develop my ability more and more faster, as much as possible! I promises I will work as hard as I can, I must try my best, or when the day comes, I will repent why didn't I follow you and strive in my high school.

  10. Dear Ms.Chan.
I've learned ...That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of a good and helpful teacher. You are the best teacher.

You greeted with a smile to everyone you meet and teach the students as much as you can. I learned lots of things with you, not only knowledge but also how to face difficult. Studying is tough, but I'm tougher. Though you smile and laugh every moment but I can feel you are very toil. You check homework for us and check the blog for bonus.

Thank you for all you did for us. I know how difficult the provincial exam is but I will try my best!

You are the best teacher +friend I know from the class in summer vacation to now.
